Dear Parents,
Our school had the privilege of hosting visitors from United Learning this week. Their compliments about our students' conduct in lessons and corridors, as well as the pride they take in their written work, are truly heartening. Your children's dedication to their education shines through, and we appreciate the positive feedback.
This week was filled with enriching experiences for our students. Year 10 embarked on a fascinating history trip to The Old Operating Theatre. Additionally, all year groups participated in engaging Maths Challenges, while a group of Y8 students explored the realms of philosophy during a university visit.

Dear Parents and Carers,
As the new term continues to get underway, it has been particularly gratifying that students have demonstrated such positive attitudes towards their learning and being back in classes. Attendance is a very important part of this – ensuring our young people can maximise their time in school – so thank you for everyone’s support in this, including parents and families.
Already, as you will know, many of our students have been busy with exams and putting their hard work into practice. This time really is an opportunity to demonstrate The Elms Academy’s values of ambition, integrity and determination – and I know staff are proud of how this is cascading through the school.

We have had a wonderful last week of term at The Elms Academy. I really enjoyed taking 60 students who had received golden postcards this term, on a trip to the cinema on Monday. This was in recognition of their outstanding hard work and consistent demonstration of our values of determination, ambition, and integrity. We hope that you enjoy receiving the postcards that are sent home by staff to celebrate your child’s effort and achievement. Please continue to encourage students to being their postcards to me, once they receive ten, so that they can receive their golden postcard and go on the list for the golden postcard trip which happens once a term.

This week, we had a visit from our Regional Director, and I was delighted to receive some really positive feedback. “There is a strong culture of achievement that pupils recognise and appreciate from Year 7 through to Year 13.” “There is a very strong culture for learning: lessons are consistently calm, focused and tightly planned.” “Pupils described excellent behaviour, lots of enrichment opportunities and supportive and knowledgeable teachers. They feel safe and happy here.”

Why does the UK have a sugar tax?

A sugar tax is a levy, or in other words, a tax imposed on producers of soft drinks containing added sugar.
The current sugar tax on UK fizzy drinks is 18p per litre, applied to drinks with sugar contents of 5 grams to 8 grams per 100ml. This is to put people off buying fizzy drinks with a high level of sugar. I am here to tell you why.

I would like to congratulate students in Years 11, 12 and 13 on a successful two weeks of mock exams. They have shown fantastic levels of determination in these exams, and their ambition to succeed is brilliant to see. Through marking these exams, teachers will now be able to give our students important feedback about areas where they show a good level of understanding and what action steps they need to take between now and the next set of mock exams in February. I have no doubt that the future is looking bright for our students in these year groups due to their hard work and the daily commitment they show to their progress.

SCIENCE NEWSLETTER 30/10/2023

Dear Readers Welcome to the first edition of our science newsletter for this academic year! It has been an extremely busy term, which saw our new Year 12 students start our sixth form courses with enthusiasm. They have started conducting some of their assessed practicals and have also started applying for work placements, showing their passion and dedication to their subjects.

What a wonderful way to end the first half term at The Elms Academy! International Evening was our best ever attended event; with hundreds of people; parents, students, siblings, staff, past students, and so many more coming together to celebrate the diversity in our very special community. Well done to all our student performers who delivered brilliant performances in the show case and thank you to all students, staff and parents who brought in delicious food for us to share. It was an amazing evening and I felt so privileged and proud to be leading a school where we embrace and celebrate our differences whilst always remembering all that brings us together. I am already looking forward to next year’s event.

We are coming to the conclusion of our open events season and have welcomed a record number of visitors into the Academy over the last few weeks. I have been immensely proud to show off our school and our fantastic students. Prospective parents have been so impressed by the quality of teaching and learning in lessons, the wider curriculum and the warm and positive relationships between students and staff. Word is certainly spreading in terms of our reputation as the leading school in the borough for outcomes at Year 11 and 13, and the quality of education that we work so hard to deliver. I would like to thank all of our students and parents for playing such an important role; you are real assets to the community we are building at The Elms Academy.
